Available light photography is the technique of shooting in low light levels and not using any additional illumination like flash, but simply using whatever light there is. It’s the light that makes the photograph, not just the subject. ‘Available light’ and ‘ambient light’ are often taken as the same thing, though they’re not really the same.
In the picture above, it’s not the objects themselves that are the subject, it’s the combination of these objects, the background and, most importantly, the lighting. Using a single candle as a light source meant a long exposure which requires either a tripod or a high ISO setting. No other light source would have produced the same effect, though.
