The pixels on the sensor actually used to make the photo. Not all of the pixels (photosites) on a sensor are used to form the image. Strips around the edges are used by the camera for internal calibration purposes. Hence why a sensor’s resolution is often quoted as, for example, ‘6.3 megapixels, 6.1 megapixels effective’.
