Focal length

A measure of a lens’s magnifying power or angle of view. Zoom lenses will have a focal length range, for example 35-105mm. The angle of view will depend on the size of the film used by the camera or the size of the sensor in a digital camera. As a result, manufacturers often quote the lens’s ‘equivalent’ focal length in 35mm camera terms. This is what most photographers will be familiar with. For example, 28mm corresponds to a wideangle lens, 35mm is a modest wideangle, 80mm is a ’short’ telephoto, 105mm is a ‘medium’ telephoto.
