Lithium battery technology isn’t just used for rechargeable cells. It’s also possible to get disposable lithium batteries, made by Energizer, for example. These are more expensive than alkalines, but their capacity and voltage characteristics make them perform far better in digital cameras.
This is because digital cameras don’t just demand high capacity, they require a consistent voltage too. This can be a problem with conventional alkalines because their chemical composition means the voltage falls as the battery is used. Often, the camera will stop working when there’s still life left in the battery, simply because the voltage has dropped below the camera’s threshold.
As well as a high capacity and consistent power output, lithium disposables also have a long storage/shelf life, so they make good spares to carry round as a backup. Check your camera’s manual, though, because in a few instances lithium cells are not recommended.
