Focussing system based on superimposing two images. Rangefinders use the principle of triangulation to focus. You look through the main viewfinder, but on a small area in the centre of the image a secondary image is superimposed. This is produced by a small mirror located further along the baseplate. As you turn the focussing ring, the mirror is turned. When the secondary and the main image coincide exactly, the lens is focussed. ‘Rangefinder’ cameras include Leica and Voigtlander models.
