This is a lens with a variable focal length or angle of view. You can ‘zoom’ in or out to change the angle of view or the magification (the same thing). Zoom lenses are now standard on just about all digital cameras, both compacts and digital SLRs. They’re much more convenient and flexible than old-fashioned fixed focal length ‘prime’ lenses, though they do involve some sacrifices too, such as a smaller maximum aperture and increased distortion and chromatic aberration (purple fringing).
