DxO Optics Pro is a program designed to correct the distortions, aberrations and other faults of common camera/lens combinations using customised correction ‘modules’.

The program itself is a RAW conversion/batch processing application which can also apply a range of image enhancements such as exposure and contrast adjustment, white balance, vibrance, sharpness and more.

The key, though, is DxO’s specially-designed modules, which are custom profiles developed by testing lenses and their properties. The software can detect the camera and lens models from the photo’s embedded EXIF (shooting) information, then automatically select the appropriate correction modules, where available. These can also be downloaded as they become available.

These modules fix distortion, chromatic aberration and corner shading effects to produce perfectly-corrected images automatically, without all the time-consuming manual adjustments usually required in other programs. It’s a little complicated and slow to use compared to programs like Aperture and Lightroom, but the results are excellent.

DxO Optics pro can work directly on JPEG or RAW files, and it does happen to be a very good RAW converter in its own right, and especially good at reducing noise in high ISO shots. The DxO website is here.
