DxO Optics Pro is a program designed to correct the distortions, aberrations and other faults of common camera/lens combinations using customised correction ‘modules’. Version 6 (Mac and PC) identifies and downloads camera and lens modules automatically.
The program itself is a RAW conversion/batch processing application which can also apply a range of image enhancements such as exposure and contrast adjustment, white balance, vibrance, sharpness and more. You choose the images you want to process, adjust images individually if necessary, then process them in a single batch, choosing a folder where you want the processed images to be saved.
The key, though, is DxO’s specially-designed modules, which are custom profiles developed by testing lenses and their properties. The software can detect the camera and lens models from the photo’s embedded EXIF (shooting) information, then automatically select the appropriate correction modules, where available. These can also be downloaded as they become available.
These modules fix distortion, chromatic aberration and corner shading effects to produce perfectly-corrected images automatically, without all the time-consuming manual adjustments usually required in other programs. DxO Optics Pro has been the only software application which attempts to use laboratory-developed profiles to do this, though with Photoshop CS5 Adobe has introduced its own automated lens profiling/correction system.
Even so, DxO Optics Pro remains a very useful workflow tool, combining lens corrections, image adjustments and very good RAW conversions in a single process. It is especially good at reducing noise in high ISO shots, and works not just with RAW files but JPEGs too.
