Resolution

Number of pixels on a sensor or pixels per inch in prints. A term which can mean different things in different contexts. In a digital camera, it’s the number of pixels (or ‘megapixels’) in the sensor. When you’re editing an [...]

Print size

It’s pretty obvious what this means; it’s the physical size of a print, its width x height in centimetres or inches. It’s worth mentioning print size as distinct from image size, though. Image size is usually (or should be) measured [...]

Pigment inks

Inkjet inks with increased permanence. Most photo printers use dye-based inks which provide rich, intense colours but are not always stable in the long-term (though manufacturers do provide special ‘archival’ papers for long-lasting prints). Epson is pioneering the use of [...]

Picture Package

Photoshop option for printing many images on a sheet. Many custom paper sizes and picture layouts are provided but you can also define your own.

PictBridge

A communications standard that allows you to connect any PictBridge-compatible camera to any PictBridge-compatible printer via a USB cable, and to print pictures direct from the camera’s memory card.

MFD (Multi-Function Device)

A combined scanner and printer. Can copy documents without your computer having to be switched on. Generally the scanning and printing quality is very good, but slightly behind that of the best and latest photo-quality scanners and printers from the [...]

Dye-sub printer

Printing technology used in small photo printers. Most desktop printers use ‘inkjet’ technology, where tiny drops of coloured inks are squirted on to the paper in a controlled fashion. Dye-sub (short for Dye Sublimation) printers use a different system. The [...]

DPI

Dots per inch, a measure of resolution in prints and scans. How many pixels (or ‘dots’ – the two are now commonly regarded as the same thing) are printed per inch. It’s also used by printer makers, though a printer’s [...]

Cropping

Cropping is the process of trimming photos for framing or to improve composition. You use the crop tool to mark out the area of a photo you want to keep. The rest of the image is discarded.

Archival printing

Producing prints which will last for decades. This requires special papers which will resist chemical degradation and to get the life claimed you must use the specific papers and inks.

All-in-one

Combined printer and scanner. As well as scanning and printing, these devices can also work as a kind of photocopier, copying pages you place under the scanner with a single press of a button, and without the need for the [...]
